The Intern's Handbook Summary & Review
Summary
In The Intern's Handbook you follow the story of John Lago, a man with a shattered past and unforgiving future. You learn that as an orphan Lago was taken into a business called HR Inc. This "business" is actually “ ...assassins trained to infiltrate multinational corporations and government agencies in order to eliminate heavily guarded executives…” (Kuhn 1). Lago was taken at age twelve when his mother was murdered and his dad had disappeared. Lago is writing a handbook for future assassins that join the program. The handbook is made up of a set of rules and Lagos' own life story. The company is constantly under threat from the FBI and they have learned of Lagos' next assignment. At the law office of Berdini, Lambert, and Locke there is a snitch who is “Selling the FBI’s witness protection list to the highest bidders” (17). Lago is assigned to find out who is the snitch and take them out. He meets a woman named Alice who works at the firm; Lago then proceeds to involve himself in a relationship with her in order to find out information. However, he develops actual feelings for her which is the first time that he has ever loved someone in his life. Throughout the mission he comes into conflict with Bob (his boss) because he can not do what is necessary to complete the mission. One day he finds Alice has been brutally murdered, Lago “... loved her like he had never loved anyone before” (215). Bob confirms that it was not him and gives Lago another chance to complete the mission. With information confirming that it was Locke who was the snitch Lago proceeds to attack him, with Locke at gunpoint he decides to let him go and leave HR Inc. in search of his father in Honduras. Lago finds his father but then finds out Alice has been working for Bob the whole time while their true target all along has been Lagos' father. A battle ensues which Bob and Marcus (Lagos' father) perish. After the battle Lago hunts down Alice and asks her to finally kill him because he is now for the first time in charge of his own life.
Review
My personal opinion of this book is that it is a great read for teenagers and young adults. It is full of exciting and relatable experiences of many teenagers that live in this world today. The book shows how you can triumph through challenge and be successful wherever the world might take you. While it may contain some vulgar language, it is this language that creates a very humors attitude to the book which makes it so relatable. For anybody going through hard times this book will help boost your confidence.Overall this book is an 8/10 for its humor and encouragement that it brings to the reader. The story is very intense and exciting that will constantly leave you wondering what will happen next. I highly recommend that everyone read the great novel The Intern's Handbook by Shane Kuhn.
