Summary In The Intern's Handbook you follow the story of John Lago, a man with a shattered past and unforgiving future. You learn that as an orphan Lago was taken into a business called HR Inc. This "business" is actually “ ...assassins trained to infiltrate multinational corporations and government agencies in order to eliminate heavily guarded executives…” (Kuhn 1). Lago was taken at age twelve when his mother was murdered and his dad had disappeared. Lago is writing a handbook for future assassins that join the program. John Lago & Conflict John Lago is twenty-five years old and has never been in control of his own life. While he was still in the womb his mother was killed causing him to be born two weeks prematurely. His father was forced to go into hiding because he was being framed for killing his wife. this left Lago all alone and he was placed into the adoption process. Throughout his life Lago went from foster house to foster house until finally being placed with a couple named Mickey and Mallory. Mickey and Mallory were drug dealers and used Lago as a delivery boy throughout the city. One day Lago had had enough of the abuse and he killed them in cold blood. He then went to prison until Bob came and got him out to work at HR Inc. That is when our story then takes place in his life. While on his last mission he meets Alice and falls in love with her. The Intern's Handbook Point-of-View & Setting

Point-of-View In The Intern's Handbook the story is told in the first person point-of-view the main character John Lago. Lago takes you through his life from start to finish. He talks about his experiences of being a child in the foster care system and his early life as an assassin. it is important that Lago is the narrator because we can then see his personal thoughts on subjects like his love life and father. Lago says that " ... getting into character is the most difficult part of the process" (Kuhn 22). We can see this as throughout the book as Lago must continually revisit horrible instances in  his life which he must tell through his old perspective to have the right appeal to his audience. His intended audience are the future members of HR Inc. The purpose of writing the handbook is to give them advice throughout their own careers as assassins. The Intern's Handbook Theme

Theme In The Intern's Handbook the main theme is that you should always be in control of your own life and the things that you do. Throughout the book john describes different instances throughout his life that he has never been in control of. These instances range from his foster home life to his current life as an assassin. Lago believes that "Sometimes you can get a shark to eat itself if you fill the water with enough blood " (Kuhn 172).This means that sometimes someone is their own worst enemy as in the case of John Lago. Throughout his life Lago has consistently contradicted himself and his thoughts. He has never stood up against the people that keep him encased in a world of darkness.
