The Intern's Handbook Theme
Theme
In The Intern's Handbook the main theme is that you should always be in control of your own life and the things that you do. Throughout the book john describes different instances throughout his life that he has never been in control of. These instances range from his foster home life to his current life as an assassin. Lago believes that "Sometimes you can get a shark to eat itself if you fill the water with enough blood " (Kuhn 172).This means that sometimes someone is their own worst enemy as in the case of John Lago. Throughout his life Lago has consistently contradicted himself and his thoughts. He has never stood up against the people that keep him encased in a world of darkness. Lago has allowed Bob to take control of his life and when Bob asked for an extension of Lagos' career John knew he would have to accept eventually or face the consequences. John says that he " ' ... never really thought about it that much because I never thought I would be alive to find out ' " (127). Everyday John knew could be his last, even as a child running drugs across a city was very dangerous work. One time he was hung by his ankles out of a 6 floor apartment building after he didn't have the right amount of drugs for a customer. When John did take control of his life by killing his foster parents he was taken into someone else's control. It took John finding love to finally realize that he was his own person and not someone else's property. This is one of the most important messages as a person today because everyone must have respect for themselves or they will grow into something they wont be proud of. Lago finds himself and knows he must be ready to die to be completely at peace with his life. The Intern's Handbook sends a message of redemption across its audience. John Lago is proof that no matter what you can always better yourself as a person. For the many people in today's society, this is a very important message to find yourself and be in control of your own life.
