The Intern's Handbook Character & Conflict
John Lago & Conflict
John Lago is twenty-five years old and has never been in control of his own life. While he was still in the womb his mother was killed causing him to be born two weeks prematurely. His father was forced to go into hiding because he was being framed for killing his wife. this left Lago all alone and he was placed into the adoption process. Throughout his life Lago went from foster house to foster house until finally being placed with a couple named Mickey and Mallory. Mickey and Mallory were drug dealers and used Lago as a delivery boy throughout the city. One day Lago had had enough of the abuse and he killed them in cold blood. He then went to prison until Bob came and got him out to work at HR Inc. That is when our story then takes place in his life. While on his last mission he meets Alice and falls in love with her. This is the first time Lago ever truly loves someone and struggles to not let his feelings interfere with his work. Lagos' main conflict however is trying to find out who he is a person. Throughout his last assignment he searches for his father. He does this because the only thing he truly wants in life is to find out where he came from. At the end of the book he is ready to die because he is finally in control of his own life something that he has never had in twenty-five years. Bob had something to Lago in his youth, he stated " ... until I was fully prepared to die, I would never be a true predator" ( Kuhn 276). This is what Lago used as his life motto, so when he gained control of his life as a man he was ready to die to become a true predator which is what he was always supposed to be.
Alice & Conflict
Alice " ... is a woman in her mid to late twenties with blond hair and brown eyes that make her beautiful..." (29). Lago meets Alice at a bar a day before his first day at Berdini, Lambert, and Locke. He soon finds out that she works at the firm so he tries to get close to her. Lago gets a little to close and creates actual feelings for her. They continue to date and then he learns that she actually works for the FBI. They continue through their relationship until she supposedly "dies". Lago finds out that she didn't and that she has been working with Bob the whole time. Even though she betrayed him Lago still loves her. Alice's major conflict is trying to not contract feelings to Lago through their relationship. Alice knows what she must do for her job but at the end of the day she knows she truly loves Lago deep down. In the end, it is not clear whether she kills Lago or not. However, knowing her true feelings for him it is highly possible that she didn't.
Bob & Conflict
Bob is Lagos' boss throughout his career at HR Inc. Bob was the one who rescued him from prison at age twelve. Since then Bob sees himself as Lagos' one true father so when he realizes Lago will never love him like a dad Bob can not handle it. Bob says to Lago that "The reason you're still alive is because I am your family" (259). Bob is so narcissistic that he never notices that Lago will never love him and that is his own downfall.
